Vocalist Michael Sadler of Canadian progressive music icons SAGA has been diagnosed with a rare form of aggressive cancer. The news of his health setback was broken on social media late Wednesday night (September 11) by the 70-year-old singer's wife Gwen.

Dear All,

Michael has asked me to share some important personal news with you.

On September 5th, during a meeting with his doctor, Michael was informed that his diagnostic test results confirmed a highly agressive form of muscle invasive cancer. It is a rare type that occurs in only 3-5 % of the cases.

To protect his life, his doctor will be performing an urgent, high risk, multi-organ, open surgical procedure tomorrow, September 12th.

Due to how fast this has all developed, we regret to say that most of our extended family, close friends and partners have not heard from us directly yet. We are sorry that you have to hear about this on social media but we have no control over the timing of everything.

Michael is, as you can imagine, very anxious but also feeling guilty about being sick and not being able to handle his work.

Especially right now, with the band and the upcoming shows in October, he is keenly aware of the expectations and wants to make sure he is well and ready.

All we can do at the moment is to keep him distracted, reassure him and help him stay in a positive frame of mind during this difficult time. He is expected to be in the hospital for a couple of weeks, with a shorter stay ideally.

Michael and our family are deeply aware that he is just one of many worldwide currently facing this terrible disease and more. In fact, we have near and dear members of both families dealing with their own battles with cancer and other equally devastating diseases.

We have much to learn in the coming days and are truly humbled and grateful to our families, the band and crew, our dear friends and all who've been so supportive, and kind to us during this time.

I will do my best to share updates about Michael whenever possible. To reduce his stress, we kindly request that you refrain from sending Michael direct messages at this time.

Michael is out and recovering from surgery - he will be in hospital for a few days. He is on lots of drugs and lots of tubes, monitors, etc.We could not be more grateful for his amazing Surgeon Dr. O and the entire surgical team, nurses and staff. Doctor O is happy with his result so far and will monitor his progress.
We can't say thank you enough for all your prayers, best wishes and messages you've sent Michael's way.

Die demnächst stattfindende Tour findet planmäßig statt. In seinem persönlichen Statement kündigt er einige „old songs you haven’t heard and some surprises“ an. Schöne Botschaft, wenngleich er schon etwas mitgenommen aussieht, ist ja auch kein Wunder.
Bei zwei Konzerten letzte Woche in United States war Ian Chrichton nicht mit dabei.
Anfang November geht es dann in Skandinavien weiter.

offenbar sind nur er und Jim Gilmour aktuell von der eigentlichen Besetzung dabei. Keine Ahnung was mit den anderen ist.

Gesund sieht Saddler schön länger nicht mehr aus. Ich habe das glaube ich im Bericht zum Konzert als Vorband von Foreigner auch geschrieben. Da war er aber fit wie ein Turnschuh.

So wirkte er auch beim Konzert vorgestern in Kopenhagen. Da bin ich relativ spontan mit der Bahn hingefahren. Passte perfekt in meinen Wochenplan. War zudem ein Zusatz Konzert, Tags zuvor war es ausverkauft. Somit wie erwartet nicht ganz so voll, von überfüllten Räumlichkeiten hatte ich nach den Oktober Konzerten von Nestor und Sweet erstmal genug. Schätzungsweise 800-900 Anwesende, 1250 gehen offiziell in das Amager Bio rein.
Schicke, weitläufige Location mit großer Bühne, beste Sicht auch vom erhöhten hinteren Bereich, zusätzlich gab es darüber einen langgezogenen Balkon. Da werde ich irgendwann mal wieder vorbeischauen.
Zu Saga: keine Vorgruppe, pünktlicher Beginn um 20:00, zehn Minuten Medley von drei relativ unbekannten Songs, war dann wohl die vorher angekündigte kleine Überraschung, weiter ging es mit einer etwas veränderten Setlist zu der Tour im Frühjahr. Zum Beispiel kein „Wind him up, kein „the Flyer“, dafür „Sound of Strangers“ oder auch „the Interview“. Die 1:53 Minuten Spielzeit fand ich es sehr ordentlich, da gab es schon kürzere Auftritte. Sound top, dass da hier und was aus der Konserve kommt hat man schon gemerkt. Gesungen wurde auf jeden Fall live. Unverkennbar das dünne Stimmchen von Jim Gilmour. Und Michael Sadler nach wie vor stimmlich auf der Höhe, vielleicht mit klitzekleinen Einbußen bei ganz schwierigen Passagen. Alles schon sehr erstaunlich, nach der anstrengenden Krebs Operation mit mehrwöchigem Krankenhausaufenthalt. im Januar steht die Chemotherapie an, vermutlich wegen der Tour verschoben. Kann man nur hoffen dass es gut geht.
